SUNY Buffalo

Residence Hall

Our concept design is centered around the importance of creating built environments that reinforce community and social gathering.  Various program elements are combined at differing scales to provide spaces for learning, relaxing, playing and dwelling.  This test fit organizes the shared spaces within the dormitory and provides an iterative example of possible relationships between the gathering spaces and dorm units.  A "Kit of Parts" strategy is used to identify a variety of social spaces.  Combined with dwelling and core components, these elements shape the overall building aggregation.  This strategy allows for flexibility in determining the ideal programmatic mix desired by the University and allows for multiple outcomes.  Other elements incorporated include: site and sustainable strategies, building orientation, outdoor gathering spaces, physical and visual connections to the landscape.

The conceptual test fit shown locates the proposed 600-bed dormitory adjacent to Lake LaSalle.  The building's main facades face north and south, taking advantage of the solar orientation of the site.  The test fit organizes the program in a double-loaded configuration with eight floors of dorm units on top of the main gathering ground floor.  The overall height is carefully considered to maximize program density while respecting the overall height of neighboring campus buildings.  Set within a landscape of intimate outdoor spaces, elements for gathering are introduced along the north and south sides of the building, providing area for play, relaxing and enjoying the outdoors.
